Kya Dickson (b. 2002) is a trained interior designer and artist based in Atlanta, GA. Growing up in the Atlanta area with access to a vibrant art and design community and family who worked in various artistic disciplines, Kya sought a way to marry her love of precision and technicality with the creativity and beauty of art. Drawn to the technicality and precision required in design, she pursued fine arts and interior architecture at Georgia Southern University, graduating in 2025. Allowing her artistic practice in painting and printmaking to influence her design practice, and vice versa, the foundation of Kya’s practice in both disciplines is to inspire deeper thought and a greater appreciation for people and places, and contribute to a safer, more sustainable, visually wonderful world.
I am an interdisciplinary designer and artist who uses a variety of skills in art, architecture, interiors, geospatial science, research, and psychology, to create art and spaces.
As a designer my artistic practice informs how I design and visualize spaces that people inhabit. Every room, building, and urban space, can be art. In addition, I treat every aspect of the design process, from programming diagrams to architectural drawings, to renderings or presentation layouts, as art in of itself, with inherent value beyond the visual communication purpose it serves. Beyond its artistic value, the design of spaces is a form of service, backed by research, and I hope to serve others through meaningful interiors that are sustainable, accessible to all, and provide wellness. I believe that designers have a responsibility to not only mitigate the negative effects of the building industry on the environment, but to create built environments and structures that have a positive net effect, while adding beauty, comfort, and significance to society.
As an artist my design practice informs how I think about the purpose of art. I tend towards a utilitarian approach, as I envision how it will enhance a space. Therefore, I think about the end use of a piece of art, and though I value its presentation in a gallery and value in of itself, I also appreciate the art piece that completes a residential interior, adds meaning to a commercial space, or serves the public in an urban setting. Formally, I balance the precision required in design with a sense of freedom and experimentation in my artistic work. Conceptually, I balance utilitarianism with the desire to provoke thought, feeling, and engage the viewer. I am inspired by history and culture, both personal and global, and the intersection of GIS and location, maps, and sense of place, with design. Focusing on printmaking techniques and oil painting, I enjoy research and information, seeking to educate through my art. Using the basic principles of art and design I use in interiors - through color, glazing, impasto, and layering in both printmaking and painting to explore depth, atmosphere, and 3 dimensionality - I hope to create beautiful art for public and private spaces that provokes emotion or deeper thought in the viewer. An important theme is conveying Biblical truths and spiritual experiences from my life, and above all, to glorify Christ through my work ethic and craft.
